Ciprofloxacin (5 μg/mL) and ampicillin (100 μg/mL) were added to stationary-phase cells and exponential-phase cells, respectively, and hourly measurements of cell viability were obtained. (A,B) Persister cell formation in BW15113 Δlon (“No Lon”) and BW15113 ΔclpP (“No ClpP”). Host BW25113 is “Wild-type E. coli”. (C,D) Persister cell formation in the absence of ppGpp using MG1655 (“wild-type E. coli”) and the ppGpp-minus strain (MG1655 ΔrelA ΔspoT, “No ppGpp”). Four independent cultures were tested. Means and standard deviations for two representative cultures are shown.
