The depletion rate coefficient as a function of the mole fraction of cholesterol in the bilayer, kD(χC). The rate coefficient decreases sharply as the more accessible population of cholesterol is depleted. The fraction of cholesterol in this population increases with increasing PC-lipid tail unsaturation from DMPC (green) to SOPC (blue) to DOPC (red). At a given χC, the rate coefficient increases with increasing lipid tail unsaturation. We treat the depletion process as second order in mβCD (35) and scale kD for DOPC by a factor of 6.25.
