The depletion rate coefficient as a function of the mole fraction of cholesterol in the bilayer, k_D(χ_C). The rate coefficient decreases sharply as the more accessible population of cholesterol is depleted. The fraction of cholesterol in this population increases with increasing PC-lipid tail unsaturation from DMPC (green) to SOPC (blue) to DOPC (red). At a given χ_C, the rate coefficient increases with increasing lipid tail unsaturation. We treat the depletion process as second order in mβCD (35) and scale k_D for DOPC by a factor of 6.25.
