Growth of R . pomeroyi wild‐type (A), the fhs null mutant (B) and the complemented mutant (C) on 4 mM glycine (Gly), sarcosine (Sar), dimethylglycine (DMG) or glycine betaine (GBT) as the sole carbon source and ammonium (5 mM) as the nitrogen source. Negative growth control was set up without added carbon source. These three strains were also grown on 0.5 mM ammonium (NH₄ ⁺) (D) or GBT (E) as a sole nitrogen source with glucose as the carbon source (10 mM). Cultures were grown in triplicate. Error bars denote standard deviations.
