Hypothesized model for the protein-controlled crystal growth in amelogenesis based on the adsorbed amelogenin assemblies, such as nanospheres or nanofibres, channelling calcium and phosphate ions from the solution or amorphous calcium phosphate entities formed through a precise coordination of Ca2+ bound to the protein and phosphate ions diffusing in the hydrodynamic layer of the protein particles onto the growing crystal surface.
