Diameter variations along first-order LRs for different classes of length and basal diameter. The length classes were 5–6, 8–10, 15–20 and 25–30 cm and the diameter classes were 0·01–0·4, 0·4–0·8, 0·8–1·2 and 1·2–2·0 mm. For each position (every 1 cm) along the root, the boxplot shows the 50 % (line), 25 % and 75 % (box margins) values. The meaning of whiskers and outliers is as in Fig. 2. The number of roots used in each panel is given in the upper left.
