A. castellanii cell death was observed by treatment with Au-conjugated chlorhexidine nanoparticles, determined by flow cytometry by propidium iodide staining as described in Materials and Methods. FACS scattergram results are expressed as percent viable A. castellanii. Note that Au-conjugated chlorhexidine nanoparticles and chlorhexidine alone exhibited significant antiacanthamoebic effects at concentrations of 5 μM or higher (P < 0.05 using 2-sample t test with two-tailed distribution). The results are expressed as the means ± standard errors from three independent experiments performed in duplicate.
