Data were evaluated by two one-way ANOVAs which revealed a statistically significant difference between groups for both neurons and oligos. Posthoc analysis revealed the mean (±SEM) number of apoptotic neurons per brain in the isoflurane (ISO) group was significantly greater than for the ISO + lithium (Li) or the control group (P < 0.001 for both). The mean number of apoptotic neurons for the ISO + Li group was not significantly different from controls. The number of apoptotic oligos for the ISO group was significantly different from the ISO + Li or control group (P < 0.05 and 0.01 respectively) and the number of apoptotic oligos for the ISO + Li group versus the control group was not significantly different.
