Suggested steps towards informed design of sort-seq experiments. A simple preliminary experiment has the potential to provide information about the key system parameters required for making knowledgable design choices: the measurement range, the typical dispersion of input distributions, the robustness to mutations, and the shape of the distributions required for maximum-likelihood estimators. These choices further depend on the goals of the experiment and the required resolution
