(B) Alu element–derived microRNA-binding sites within an mRNA can promote mRNA decay and/or inhibit mRNA translation. (C) Intermolecular base pairing via partially complementary SINEs can create Staufen-binding sites that trigger Staufen-mediated mRNA decay.
