A symbiotic relationship exists between humans and our gut microbiota regarding energy homeostasis. Humans provide gut bacteria with a protected environment and carbohydrates. The gut microbiome is enriched for genes that encode enzymes such as glycoside hydrolases (GH) and polysaccharide lyases (PL) that catabolize complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars that are utilized by both the gut microbiota and us as their human hosts.
