Identify a suitable mentor and which areas you require help with^{10, 19}

Be reliable and committed^{15, 22}

Prepare for meetings and show the mentor you are dedicated, not wasting his or her time¹⁹

Periodically self-assess your current skills and relationship to career goals¹⁰

Be receptive and willing to learn from the mentor¹⁹

Do not hesitate to bring up topics you want to discuss or to ask for help⁸

Be honest and tell your mentor what you think, not what you think they want to hear^19,22
