Blocking NMDA receptors suppresses spiking responses. A, Average PSTHs for dark bar stimulation (−80%) at the preferred orientation in the center of the RF (n = 3 cells). Application of the NMDA antagonist reversibly suppressed the basal firing rate and the ON response at the termination of the dark flash. B, The increase in spiking produces by negative contrast stimulation in the subfields adjacent to the center was suppressed by the NMDA antagonist.
