The “hypoxic response” defined as the % increase in the ventilatory equivalent, V̇E/V̇O2, is shown for the data of Figs. 5 and 6. Mean +/− SEM values are plotted. Muscimol treatment decreased the “hypoxic response” in wakefulness and NREM sleep only at 30 °C (P< 0.03, repeated measures ANOVA; P< 0.04 interaction with temperature) with no significant interaction with state (awake, NREM sleep).
