Pretreatment of HAEC with antibodies against α5 and β1, but not α3, αv, or β3, inhibited MM-LDL–mediated monocyte binding. HAEC were pretreated for 30 min with 5 μg/ml of blocking antibodies to α5, α3, αv, β1, and β3 before addition of MM-LDL for 4 h at 37°C (in the continuing presence of antibody). The cells were rinsed extensively, and a monocyte binding assay was performed. The MM-LDL–induced increase in monocyte binding was significantly blocked back to control levels by antibodies to α5 and β1 but not α3, αv, or β3.
