M n number average molecular weight, M w weight average molecular weight, M w /M n the polydispersity index, used as a measure of the broadness of a molecular weight distribution of a polymer. The larger the polydispersity index, the broader the molecular weight. Step polymerization reactions typically yield Mw/Mn values of around 2.0
