FliD-mediated adhesion of different E. coli pathotypes. Values are mean ± standard deviation (SD). Note the significant decrease in the adherence of all of the E. coli strains tested after incubation with Caco-2 cells with purified FliD or after treatment of bacterial cells with anti-FliD serum, compared with that in assays performed with Caco-2 cells pretreated with BSA or preimmune mouse serum (P < 0.001). Values were obtained in three independent experiments performed in duplicate.
