Lactose prevents the adverse effect of drying on sections during staining. A lymph nodal breast cancer metastasis and a lymph node (inset) were incubated with the primary antibody (Ki-67/MIB 1 and BCL6, respectively) and dried unwashed, before counterstaining. The staining is reduced and abolished in (A); however, the presence of 10% lactose in (B) showed the staining to be unaffected by the drying. Original magnification 10×; Scale, 100 µm.
