Proposed schematic overlay of the observed immunohistochemical staining in anagen and telogen HC stages. CD34+ and K15+ cells do not co-localize within the isthmus in anagen HFs but co-localize in telogen canine HFs. Sox9+ cells are present in the innermost layer of the anagen ORS and extend towards the CD34+ isthmic compartment. LGR5+ cells can be found solely in the secondary hair germ in telogen where CD34 and K15 are expressed as well. Nestin+ cells are detected only in the dermal papilla of the anagen follicle. Note that, for a better overview, the schematic drawings of the HFs depict only one follicle of each cycle stage in which a positive staining was observed.
