The respondent hospitals were part of the Variations Collaborative Study Group, a convenience sample of teaching hospitals organized to evaluate resource utilization and outcomes in HF patients. This teaching hospital network included 14 U.S. academic medical centers, representing 17 affiliated hospitals. All of the study group hospitals were part of the UHC.
