Control for 0 mM Ca²⁺. Addition of the Ca²⁺ chelator EGTA to the extracellular medium containing 1 mM Ca²⁺ is similar to changing the extracellular concentration of Ca²⁺ to 0 mM. (Left) EGTA eliminated the synchronization between the neurons with little change to the individual neuron’s mean firing rate. (Right) Likewise, the addition of EGTA to a calcium-free medium had no additional effect.
