  • Resistance to tetracyclines has emerged during previous cholera epidemics; resistance patterns should be monitored

  • Contraindicated in pregnant women

Azithromycin 1g single dose 20 mg/kg single dose
  • Preferred in pediatric population

Alternative antibiotics
Tetracycline 500 mg every 6 hours for 3 days 50 mg/kg/day divided every 6 hours for 3 days
  • Not recommended in children under 9 years (teeth staining)

Erythromycin 250 mg every 6 hours for 3 days 40 mg/kg/day divided every 6 hours for 3 days
