Paternal and maternal methylated gDMRs are associated with distinct genomic locations. Paternally methylated gDMRs are located at intergenic regions and methylation at gDMRs specifies allele-specific expression of genes at flanking genes. Maternally methylated gDMRs are located at intragenic sites and methylation can directly repress transcription of an antisense transcript as well as influence the expression of flanking genes within the cluster
