Histologic (hematoxylin and eosin) effects of nimodipine microparticles in beagles sacrificed 15 (top row) or 29 days (bottom row) after intraventricular injection of 0.9 % NaCl, intraventricular nimodipine–poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microparticles (17, 51, or 103 mg nimodipine), or intracisternal nimodipine–PLGA microparticles (103 mg nimodipine). Granulomatous foreign body type reaction was noted in the cerebral ventricles and subarachnoid space after injection of any of the microparticle formulations although the incidence and severity was related to dose. The presence of the foreign material and inflammatory reaction was incompletely resolved by day 29. Scale bar = 500 μm
