(a) Following oral exposure to a DENV infectious blood meal, individual female mosquitoes were maintained in cardboard boxes (80-mm high and 44 mm in diameter) and continuously exposed to a 1-cm² square of colored honey-impregnated filter paper. (b) At each sampling time point, pieces of filter paper placed below the cardboard boxes were visually inspected for colored excreta spots that were excised with a scalpel. Excised excreta spots were soaked in PBS for 20 min and viral RNA was extracted from the solution.
