Effect of added NaCl on induction of (a) MG1655 and (b) MG1655 recA mutant lysogens. Wild-type MG1655 (a) and MG1655recA (b), lysogenized with 933W (white bars), BAA2326 (black bars), λ (stippled bars) or 434 (hatched bars) were grown at 37 °C to mid-log with aeration. Cells were washed and re-suspended in LB supplemented with 1 mM MgSO4, 0.5 mM CaCl2, and (a) various concentrations of NaCl, or (b) 300 mM NaCl. For each condition, the amount of phage (plaque forming units—PFU) and bacteria (colony forming units—CFU) were determined after 5 h incubation as described in the Materials and Methods.
