Standardised proportions were calculated as O/∑_i(n_i * S_i/N_i) where O was the observed frequency of the specified symptom in the occupational group, and within the i^th of 8 strata of sex and 10-year age band, n_i was the total number of symptom reports (any of the seven symptoms) in the occupational group, S_i was the number of reports of the specified symptom in all occupational groups combined, and N_i was the total number of symptom reports (any of the seven symptoms) in all occupational groups combined.
