VC/VS is not a single identifiable anatomical structure but a region containing fibers of passage that include principally prefrontal connections of the dorsal prefrontal cortex (DPFC), dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) with the thalamus (mediodorsal, midline-intralaminar and anterior medial nuclei), amygdala, hypothalamus and brainstem (substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area, raphe nuclei and peduncolopontine tegmental nucleus). With respect to obsessive-compulsive disorder, the connections of lateral orbitofrontal cortex with the thalamus are considered to play a critical role in its pathophysiology.
