Prior to implantation, expression of the pluripotency gene Nanog needs to be repressed in TE and tightly controlled in EPI. BAF complexes in TE, which have an increased stability of BAF155-BRG1 contact, act to repress the expression of Nanog. In EPI, however, the stability of the BAF complex is decreased through CARM1-mediated methylation of subunit BAF155. This mechanism modulates the expression of Nanog that is compatible with further embryonic development.
