Grey bars provide the analytical predictions of the neutral model M₀ with d = d* (computed from the left column of electronic supplementary material, table A4.3) for symmetric (dark grey) and asymmetric (light grey) metacommunities. Simulation parameters are given in table 1. A point is associated with each grey bar, which represents the average estimate value obtained from 100 independent simulations of model M₁. A 95% CI of the expected diversity/dissimilarity value under model M₁ is reported around each point.
