Schematic representation of hybrid active–passive system. A mixture of passive polystyrene particles (blue spheres) and active ferromagnetic particles (red spheres) is inserted into a small channel that is then sealed with epoxy. Visualization is accomplished using a microscope in bright-field mode. Active particles are rotated at an angular frequency, ω, in the x–y plane in a dense monolayer of passive particles. The active and inactive particles are both 5 μm in diameter.
