Engineering a SOX18-selective decoy. (A) Valine 32 of SOX18 maps to a region proximal to the phosphodiester connecting nucleotides C2 and A3. Only SOX18 possesses an aliphatic valine at position 32 but SOX17 and many other SOX proteins contain an acidic glutamate (B and C). Valine 32 is evolutionarily conserved amongst SOX18 orthologs but unique within the SOX family (C).
