Characteristics of successfully matched HPB fellows – most frequent responses from fellows

  • Completed residency at an academic medical center in the United States

  • Graduated from medical school in a foreign country other than the United States

  • Average ABSITE score greater than the 75th percentile

  • Served on a hospital committee at some point during residency

  • Performed over 1000 major cases during residency but less than 40 HPB specific cases

  • HPB surgery specific mentor

  • CV included 10 oral or poster presentations and peer reviewed publications with 1–5 HPB related publications or first authored

  • Has not completed any prior fellowship or practiced as a surgeon prior to seeking HPB fellowship training

  • Applied to 11–15 fellowship programs, was granted 10 or fewer interviews, attended 1–5 interviews, and ranked 1–5 programs after interviews

  • Did not have prospective job but was likely to want an academic job plan
