•Completed residency at an academic medical center in the United States

•Graduated from medical school in a foreign country other than the United States

•Average ABSITE score greater than the 75th percentile

•Served on a hospital committee at some point during residency

•Performed over 1000 major cases during residency but less than 40 HPB specific cases

•HPB surgery specific mentor

•CV included 10 oral or poster presentations and peer reviewed publications with 1–5 HPB related publications or first authored

•Has not completed any prior fellowship or practiced as a surgeon prior to seeking HPB fellowship training

•Applied to 11–15 fellowship programs, was granted 10 or fewer interviews, attended 1–5 interviews, and ranked 1–5 programs after interviews

•Did not have prospective job but was likely to want an academic job plan
