For cells to be considered positive for CD45 or EpCAM, they had to have a clear ring of fluorescence, indicating surface expression of the protein. If no clear ring of fluorescence was present at the boundary of the cell, general fluorescence was considered to be background, nonspecific fluorescence. WBC = white blood cell.
