Germination of spores requires both carbon and nitrogen sources. (A) The germination potential of a panel of compounds was tested on spores. All compounds were diluted in PBS to a working concentration of 100 mM except CaCl2 and MgCl2 which were used at 1mM. Germination was allowed to proceed for 16 hours at 30°C after which population composition was assessed. Error bars represent standard deviation. (B)-(F) Histograms of cell size and aspect ratio for a subset of conditions from (A). 2D histograms include cell populations from three independent wells.
