2The wealth index was a composite measure of the living standard of a household, calculated using data on a household’s ownership of selected assets, materials used for houshing construction, water access and sanitation facitlities. The wealth index placed household on a contniuous scale of relative weath using principal components anlysis. Individuals were ranked according to the score of the household in which they resided and the sample was divisded into five groups, each with an equal number of indiviuals (quintiles), ranging from the lowest to highest level of wealth.
