Sketch of the water-based active gel and its components. Bundles of MTs are formed via depletion interaction, which is triggered by the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the suspension, as illustrated by the red arrows. Within bundles, MTs are cross-linked by ATP-activated kinesin motor clusters, which induce interfilament sliding when adjacent MTs are oppositely aligned. The local forces exerted by the protein complexes result in synchronized collective motility.
