Table 2. Major advantages of xenotransplantation over allotransplantation.

  1. Unlimited supply of organs, tissues, and cells

     Unlimited supply will allow transplantation procedures in ‘borderline’ candidates who might otherwise be declined

  2. Organs available electively

     Will avoid the need for chronic dialysis in patients with renal failure and for mechanical device support in patients with heart failure

  3. Avoids the detrimental effects of brain death on donor organs

     The process of undergoing brain death can cause structural injury of the myocardium and result in depletion of the body's energy stores

  4. Provides exogenous infection-free sources of organs, tissues, and cells

  5. Obviates the ‘cultural’ barriers to deceased human donation present in somecountries, e.g., Japan
