Experimental timeline. Four days prior to air or ozone exposure, WKY rats underwent SHAM, DEMED, or ADREX. After 4 days of recovery, rats were exposed to air or ozone for 4 h/day for 1 day (A, 1-D) or 4 h/day for 2 consecutive days (B, 2-D). GTT was performed in the 2-D exposure group only after the first day of exposure. Immediately following each exposure, rats were necropsied for analysis of lung injury and inflammation, neurohormones, and metabolic biomarkers.
