Figure 1

Formation of low-valent iron species upon reaction of FeCl2(SciOPP) (1-Cl2) with phenyl nucleophiles. The 80 K Mössbauer spectra of the in situ iron species from reaction of 57Fe–1-Cl2 with (A) 20 equiv tBuPh-borate/6.7 equiv MgBr2 and (B) 2 equiv PhMgBr at 25 °C. The minor S = 1/2 component (3) observed by 10 K EPR spectroscopy upon reaction with PhMgBr (∼5% of all iron present) is shown in the inset of (B). (C) X-ray crystal structure of Fe(η6-biphenyl)(SciOPP) (2) with thermal ellipsoids shown at 50% probability.
