The aromatic side chain on TMH 7. (A) PepT (occluded), (B) GLUT1 (outward), and (C) LacY (inward; PDB IDs 2XUT, 2PYP, and 1PV6, respectively). In both proteins, the most conserved aromatic residue points into the central TM cavity between the two domains, but the absolute position with respect to the membrane is variable.
