Human visceral leishmaniasis patients exhibit elevated serum concentrations of heme. Serum samples obtained from patients with VL (n=49) and healthy controls (HC, n=39) from an endemic area in the Northeast of Brazil. Total heme in plasma samples was estimated by a colorimetric determination. Mann–Whitney U test was used to verify statistical difference between HC and VL.
