Application of antibiotics at sub-MIC concentration does not induce competence. wt strain with a reporter for the master regulator comK, P_comK gfp (BD2711), was diluted into fresh competence medium containing the antibiotics concentrations depicted in the graphs. Growth (OD₆₀₀) was monitored. After 24 h the fraction of competent cells f_K was determined using flow cytometry. (A) ampicillin, (B) erythromycin, (C) rifampicin. Each graph is a representative result of at least three independent experiments.
