Formation of NAIs in the cytoplasm of various mutants. Cytoplasmic protein complexes isolated from wild-type (WT) and WT-Ssl3829-YH (A), ∆ssl3829 (C), ∆slr1097 (D), and NdhI-less (E) strains and purified from the WT-Ssl3829-YH using an Ni2+ column (B) were separated by CN-PAGE followed by two-dimensional SDS-PAGE. Proteins were immunodetected with two antibodies against NdhH and NdhK or the specific antibodies indicated. Dashed lines indicate the positions of NAIs, and the red arrow indicates the position of a new complex of about 150 kD produced by Slr1097 deletion. Asterisks represent free Ssl3829-YH proteins.
