During ischemia-reperfusion (I/R), C/EBP-β (top panel) transactivates miR-16 which, in turn, leads to BCL-2 repression and activation of epithelium cells apoptosis, resulting in kidney function loss. During CEBP-β alteration in kidney after I/R (bottom panel), low activity of CEBP-β fails to transactivate miR-16, which results in lack of BCL-2 inhibition and results in block of I/R induced kidney injury.
