Standard dosage Shingles: 500 mg orally every 8 h for 7–10 days. Dosage needs to be adjusted in patients with renal insufficiency.
Contraindications Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Major drug interactions None.
Major side effects Headaches (10–40 %), dysmenorrhea (1–8 %), erythema multiforme (rare)
Special points Famciclovir is a prodrug that gets metabolized to penciclovir which is the active form of the drug.
