Our stimulus set comprised 8 subordinate level exemplars from each of 8 basic level categories. Participants were shown 16 images from each exemplar, varying in pose and color (only one representative image is shown above). Within each basic category, exemplars are organized according to behavioral typicality from the most typical (left) to the least typical (right): e.g. airliners (rank 1) and fighter planes (rank 2) were judged to be much more typical examples of planes than stealth planes (rank 7) and gyrocopters (rank 8).
