Frontal sections through the caudal embryonic telencephalon of different mouse embryos (E14.5) hybridized for Nkx2.1, Lhx6, or Shh. Sections in A,B are at about the level when internal capsule enters/exits the telencephalon. Sections in C,D are at the level of the posterior medial amygdala (Me). AEP continues to be observed as a distinct domain (different from MGE). While MGE is related to the globus pallidus (GP), the AEP is related to a band of Lhx6 expression that extends into the amygdala following the future course of the stria terminalis. It appears to produce part of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST). Note the strong Shh expression in the primordium of the posteroventral part of the medial amygdala (MePV), suggesting at least a partial origin in POC. See text for more details.
