Figure 2

PDGF-induced differentiation of S-SMCs to R-SMCs is accompanied by different expression profiles of the gap junction proteins Cx40 and Cx43. Isolated S-SMCs were treated with PDGF or the gap junction blocker glycyrrhetinic acid following PDGF treatment. Immunochemical staining was used to detect the expression of (A) Cx40 or (B) Cx43 in cells of the different treatment groups. The expression levels of (C) Cx40 and (D) Cx43 in the different groups were also detected using flow cytometry. (E) Quantitative data of the flow cytometry results. PDGF, platelet-derived growth factor; SMC, smooth muscle cell; S-SMC, spindle-shaped SMC; R-SMC, rhomboid SMC; SSC, side scatter; FSC, forward scatter; FITC, fluorescein isothiocyanate.
