Table 4.

Echocardiographic Parameters in Patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices

Changes in Echocardiographic Variables Postoperatively in Patients with Normal LVAD Function
  1. Signs of decreased left ventricular filling pressures:

    1. Increase in mitral inflow deceleration time

    2. Decrease in left atrial volume

    3. Decrease in E/eā€™ ratio

    4. Neutral or slightly leftward position of the interventricular and atrial septum

  2. Decreased estimated right atrial pressure

  3. Improvement in RV function both qualitatively and quantitatively (RIMP, fractional area change)

  4. Decreased severity of mitral regurgitation

  5. Increased severity of aortic regurgitation

Variables Associated with Adverse Outcome in Patients with LVAD
  1. Increased estimated left atrial pressure

  2. Mitral deceleration index <2 (ratio of deceleration time to E-wave velocity)

  3. Decreased tricuspid lateral annulus velocity

LVAD= left ventricular assist device, RIMP= right ventricular index of myocardial performance, RV= right ventricle
