Schematic representation of multifunctional nanoparticles targeted to tumor cells and CSCs. Administration of multifunctional nanoparticles that consists of an inner core containing paramagnetic iron oxide (imaging), and middle layer containing a chemotherapeutic (cisplatin) and an outer layer containing a chemosensitizing agent (gefitinib) that is decorated with EGFR and c-Kit targeting moieties will result in killing of both tumor cells and cancer stem cells. The delivery of the nanoparticles and response to therapy can be monitored non-invasively by magnetic resonance imaging.
